As I progressed with the book the Giver I found out that the ceremony of twelves was about to happen and I felt really anxious to see what assignment will Jonas get and specially Asher because his personality makes him difficult to take serious, like the time he was saying smack instead of snack and he would constantly be beaten by the instructor. I am pretty sure Fiona will get a assignment which will involve her taking care of other people because that suits her personality the best. While I got to the part of the ceremony Asher got the assignment of Director of Recreation and Fiona got a nurture assignment but when it came to Jonas they skipped him for some reason but at the end of chapter 8 he is questioning himself what has he done wrong? At the beginning of chapter 9 the chief elder explains to Jonas that he hasn't been assign to anything but he has been selected for him to be the new receiver of memory. He was told that this was no easy task, he would experience an indescribable pain but those memories were for him to asses the community given the experience of this memories of the past. Jonas is hesitating a lot if he should or shouldn't accept this especial task.
During the speech of the chief elder towards Jonas as the new receiver Jonas had some thoughts that were kind of interested and that I questioned a lot those thoughts. The quote was:
"For a moment he froze, consumed by despair. He didn´t have it, the whatever-she-had-said. He didn´t know what it was. Now was the moment when he would have confess, to say, "No, I don´t. I can´t." and trow himself on their mercy."
Why does Jonas has such intense feelings towards being the new receiver that was such and special job why would he want to turn it down? Was it because of the pain? if so Jonas at this point must realize that if a receiver gets to have all the memories of the past he will have to endure whatever is coming at him he has to know why his society became how it became. The job of the receiver is a job given to truly remarkable people he should feel proud not scared though the shock is very big.But he must understand that from now on some people might treat him different then before.
The chapters 6-9 were very interesting since they build up a lot of suspense form the beginning till the very end when Jonas is selected as the receiver. I did like the amount of detail Jonas used to describe most of the ceremonies like the details of the extra pockets or the buttons even how the girls could cut their hair short. That and also what meant all those actions and things like that because that way I was able to picture the scenario better or at least imagine how they would dress up like on some certain ages. I did enjoyed reading this chapters and I am looking forward for what will Jonas´s training will be like
I like how you use questions and i would like to respomdome. When you ask that why he want to turn his job down, I thinkthat he is confused because he had never heard about it. But the first tim e of his training when he feels snow, he realized and learn lot of new thigs that none on his community had felt before. Finally I really like your post and how you undestant the book. :)
